Dickens, Charles [1812 - 1870]. Wilkins, William Glyde; Smith, Walter - Former Owners
BARNABY RUDGE. By Charles Dickens
New York: William H. Colyer, No. 5 Hague-Street, 1842. 1st edition thus, i.e. by this publisher (Edgar & Vail, p. 20; Smith AMERICAN 5, pp. 193 - 194; Wilkins, p. 20. Cf. Gimbel A64). Later green cloth spine over drab paper boards. Printed paper title label to spine. 2 volumes: [11] - 215, [3 (blank)]; [11] - 243, [3 (blank)] pp. 12mo. 7-1/2" x 4-1/2". Modest shelf wear. Bookplate of William Glyde Wilkins. Period pencil pos to preliminary blank. Usual bit of foxing & staining to paper. A solid VG - VG+ set. Scarce contemporaneous edition of Dickens' BARNABY RUDGE, e.g. not found in the Calinescu Collection catalogue, and the first time we've been able to offer a copy. Curiously enough, Wilkins notes the Colyer edition with an 1843 imprint date, perhaps this set came to him after 1910? NB. While there is no ownership markings of Walter Smith's, we bought this set from his estate and attest to that provenance.
